Saint Dominic was a priest and founder of the Dominican Order. He is a contemporary of Saint Francis and founded the Dominicans to form priests to be vibrant preachers of the truth of Christ and His Church. His order was nicknamed the “Order of preachers” by Pope Honorius III.
Dominic saw a need for a organizational structure to address the spiritual needs of the growing cities around him. He instructed his brothers to live lives of prayer and penance while also continuing extensive study and educational formation. The Dominicans also continued to widely spread the devotion of the Rosary.
Dominic is shown here with a rosary placed tenderly over his heart and the scriptures open for all that come forth to him. He gazes on the viewer with loving eyes, because he loved people so intensely and deeply.
